Wow, this was a great write up. I found myself convinced it was both Rodrigo or Angel depending on where I was in the story. Regardless, that was also such an unsettling read. The part about the son’s door being broken down &amp; dragged from under the bed was horrific. Plus, the stabbings were so excessively violent. I sincerely hope this case is resolved one day because if it wasn’t the surviving son, what an awful accusation to try to grieve under for all these years.

Wtf is wrong with the police, the guy who murdered another over a neighbor dispute, has a history of violence,  murdered another while awaiting trial,  is obsessed with the family to the point of defacing their grave, says the kid didn't do it, and collected newspaper articles years later is obviously the one who did it wtf.

And people think an 18 year old with no criminal history who was at boarding school 80 km away could commit a crime this vicious? Like,  cmon.

The part about Álvaro hearing the murders of his parents and hiding under his bed, only to have the killer kick his bedroom door in, drag him out and kill him too will stay with me. It sounds like a scene from a slasher-style horror film. Little Álvaro experienced it for real. Absolutely terrifying. 

I’m going back and forth on this. I thought the fact that Rodrigo’s room was also ransacked like the killer was looking for him could mean he *didn’t* do it, but of course if he *did* do it he wouldn’t skip his own room because that’d give him away. 

I don’t think the DNA from the cigarette butts not matching Rodrigo clears him. Surely it can’t be proved that whoever smoked them was also the murderer, as no other unrelated DNA was found in or near the house. 

Ángel is obviously a monstrous person (and a convicted murderer!), and if pushed I’d say he *probably* did it, but I always regard prison “confessions” with, at best, scepticism and there’s very little else to go on. 

And depending on what powers Salvador had as the mayor, he could’ve made a *lot* of enemies, not necessarily just political rivals. 

I have no idea what to make of this one.

For lack of DNA on cigarettes bottoms, they may have placed decoys, and performed the ordeal in gloves.

Nice read! It was a little unclear who was who, names were brought in and I couldn't work out who Jean Michel was at first. I really enjoyed the narration though and got lost in it and could picture it well.

What I don't understand timing-wise is if the level of cyanide in Emilie's blood should have killed her in seconds, why was she in a coma, not dead, when the paramedics arrived six minutes after the emergency call?

There was a lot of evidence at trial that the strange behaviour of the cyanide might be because it was heated, either deliberately or by being left in the glove compartment of a hot car.

Looking at the evidence the journalists theory is plausible. Especially the part about the cover up with the different forms of cyanide and the Josacine. Jean-Michiel calling Denis first instead of the ambulance and then what Denis said in the phone call to Jean-Michael about him putting the product in the Josacine.. Jean-Michael would have got both forms of cyanide from Denis too. I think Jean-Michael looks more guilty than Deperrois.

I wonder whether there was actually rat poisoning set up under the sink.. if there was, was it diluted and by how much? How long would the effects take if a watered down version of the chemical was ingested by Emilie? If a non-watered down version was injested? Was Emilie ever seen under the sink between getting dropped off and getting ready to go to out? Unfortunately it seems like we may never know.

I'm from that region in France and that little girl was my age. I remember the news about it and how I found that shocking back then. I remember seeing a true crime documentary from 2002 about it but I wasn't updated on the newest updates, so thanks.

I think this is the crux of the matter. There's no actual evidence against Deperrois. Yes, he owned cyanide, but apparently so did everyone else in town, including the two guys who were first on the scene. Jean-Michel and Denis also had the same opportunity Deperrois did. Plus Denis is out here making shady statements about the "product" - that needs explaining. The chain of custody on the cyanide bottle is dubious. Meanwhile, the police can't rule out that it was an accident caused by the children.

In the US, I don't think this would even get to court.

2. They were at their home getting ready to go to the banquet when Émilie took her medication and collapsed. "Jean rushed back home, carrying Émilie and placing her on the couch". Weren't they already home?

3. I had to scroll way up to figure who Denis was. Jean-Michel calls him &amp; we don't see his name mentioned again until he testifies in court. Maybe give us a reminder us when it's been that long?

4. In both the phone call where the friend of Jean-Marc Deperrois calls him, and later when Denis calls Jean-Michel, the caller refers to cyanide as "the product". Is this only a weird coincidence because of the translation?

5. The theory that Émilie accidentally drank from the cyanide bottle under the sink but Jean-Michel &amp; Denis added it to the Josacine was supposedly to make it look like an accident doesn't work. How does taking an accidental poisoning from a bottle under the sink look MORE accidental when it's added to a child's medicine where there should be no cyanide?

It's such a horrible, sad story for everyone involved.

I feel like it is one of those cases that will probably never be solved, and it's all "thanks" to the botched crime scene investigation.

The French police at the time had a reputation for being lazy and this case is no exception. They didn't even care about the poor little girl who suffered 15 minutes of pure agony! Hope she's at peace now.
